Statement from Teri Olle, Director of Economic Security California Action:
“It is not shocking that the Big Tech companies and their wealthy investors are coming out against common-sense safety guardrails for AI. These leaders are using their monopoly power and massive budgets to try to sway policymakers in Sacramento away from what’s in the public’s best interest. For too long, we’ve let tech titans operate regulation-free, without any real measures of accountability for the impact of their technology on people and communities.
As we’ve seen with the creation and expansion of the internet and social media, we cannot count on this industry to self-regulate. They simply won’t put public interest above their profits—as they have proven time and again.
As Big Tech continues to scramble and spread misinformation, scare tactics, and blatant falsehoods, we need our elected leaders to stay strong in their knowledge that SB 1047 is critical to ensuring the public good is at the forefront of AI innovation. We encourage lawmakers to pass this bill and Governor Newsom to sign it into law.”
