Republicans Reject Relief for Americans Crushed by Skyrocketing Healthcare Costs

House to rubber-stamp Senate deal to reopen government, prolonging pain for Americans

Today, the U.S. House of Representatives is expected to vote to end the government shutdown without offering any solution for skyrocketing health insurance premiums, effective January 1, 2026, which will impact over 22 million Americans who receive coverage through the Affordable Care Act (ACA).  Economic Security Project Action issued the following statement:

“Republicans are sending a clear message that they will not lift a finger to help working Americans have a better, more affordable life,” said Adam Ruben, Director of Economic Security Project Action (ESPA). “ESPA has heard from people and local organizations across the country about how the rising costs of essentials – like groceries, electricity bills, and housing – are hurting their communities. Instead of making life more affordable, Republicans united around a healthcare heist and created an impossible choice for their congressional colleagues during this shutdown. They held basic services – like food security and air safety – hostage, causing pain so acute that some Democrats, disappointingly, gave in to Republican extortion. While the shutdown is now over, America is still facing an affordability crisis with rising healthcare costs on the horizon, and Republicans’ vote just continues the pain. It’s time any Republican who claims to care about affordability insists on a vote to extend the healthcare tax credits and sign on to the discharge position.”
