Washington D.C. – Today, the Senate failed to advance a tax package that would have significantly expanded the Child Tax Credit for low and middle-income families, reaching an estimated 16 million children who don’t currently receive the full CTC. Unfortunately, despite passing the House with overwhelming bipartisan support (357 to 70), all but 3 Republican Senators blocked the Tax Relief for American Families and Workers Act of 2024 (H.R. 7024) by a vote of 48 to 44, failing to reach the 60 vote threshold needed to ultimately send it to President Biden. All Democrats present voted in support. In response to this news, Anna Aurilio, Senior Campaign Director for Economic Security Project Action, issued the following statement:
“Three years ago, parents across the nation experienced the transformative power of the expanded Child Tax Credit. It put hundreds of millions of dollars back into the pockets of Americans to help them make ends meet for their families. Since that time, parents have advocated tirelessly for Congress to take action and demonstrate that they can prioritize the well-being of children and families. Unfortunately, too many Senate Republicans rejected this rare bipartisan agreement to quickly deliver for low and middle income families. These Senators are selfishly picking politics over parents and brazenly disregarding this important opportunity to help families succeed right now. The expanded Child Tax Credit was a critical tool for millions of parents who were struggling to afford the necessities and should be made permanent in the 2025 tax reform fight. ”
